Two km east of the city of Assisi is the Church of Rivotorto. Originally it was a simple hut covered with branches that peasants used for shelter, but in 1208 San Francesco and the brothers he had attracted began to live there. Thus this was the first place where the brothers came together before settling at the Portiuncula in 1210. In 1455 the humble dwelling was transformed into a small church, and in the eighteenth century it was expanded into a more important church with an adjoining convent. The earthquake of 1854 destroyed these structures, and it was then reconstructed in the neo-Gothic style that you see today.
